Doctoral Researcher (f/m/x) in Human/Economic Geography

The DFG-funded project ‘Processes of commodification and standardization in tropical freshwater fish value chains – current and historical perspectives’ is seeking a doctoral researcher (f/m/x) (part-time) for empirical studies on value chains and international trade of ornamental fishes and the commodification of the ‘wild’.


  • Planning and conducting fieldwork in Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore and neighboring countries (Indonesia, Malaysia), and East Africa (Tanzania)
  • Exploring a relatively new field at the intersection of Economic Geography and more-than-human approaches
  • Writing of a doctoral thesis and contributions to academic publications related to the project
  • Presenting research findings at conferences and workshops


  • Master‘s degree (or equivalent) in Geography or related disciplines
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and motivation for independent fieldwork in Southeast Asia and Africa
  • Fitness for travel and willingness to work independently in tropical environments, including extended periods of fieldwork in remote areas
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • At least basic knowledge of German, because German-language sources must also be analyzed
  • Solid knowledge of basic theories and concepts of Economic Geography
  • Openness to new and innovative research approaches

The position is available from 01 December 2023 on a part-time basis (29,87 hours per week). The contract is limited to a duration of 3 years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary will be based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
