University of Cologne: 2 Positions on Hydrological Modeling (f/m/d)

The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.

The positions are funded within the new EU HORIZON-RIA project DISTENDER and are particularly suitable for researchers pursuing a doctoral degree.
Within DISTENDER, we aim at developing a framework supporting climate adaptation and mitigation strategies by cross-sectoral integration and at examining multi-scale interactions of climate adaptation and mitigation actions. DISTENDER is a consortium of 31 partners from 14 Europeancountries.

 

YOUR TASKS

The task of our research group is to assessthe vulnerability of selected case study regions regarding floods and droughts . The scope of the positions will be on numerical modeling of hydrological processesparticularly with regards to Position a): mesoscale modeling of floods and droughts in selected European watersheds using the SWATmodel Position b) small scale modeling of flash floods in urban areas due to extreme precipitation.

 

YOUR PROFILE

  • M.Scdegree in hydrology, geography or a related discipline
  • Strong analytical, methodological, organizational and communication skills
  • Experience with numerical modeling, GISand data analysis using statistical software packages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Motivation to work in an international and interdisciplinary con-sortium
  • Programming skills are advantageous (esp. R,python , FORTRAN)

The position is available from 01.07.2022 on a part-time basis (7So/o). It is limited until 30.11.2022. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
