University of Zurich: PhD position in Social and Cultural Geography

PhD position in Social and Cultural Geography

The Department of Geography at the University of Zurich is advertising a PhD position in Social and Cultural Geography. The successful applicant will be part of the newly established Social and Cultural Geography research group which focusses on the transformation of cities and urban societies. In particular, the group develops research on urban marginalization, exclusion and socio-spatial inequalities at global and local scales. We are looking for candidates who seek to pursue a PhD that aligns with the above research themes. Applicants with an interest in critical social and cultural theories (including everyday, feminist, post-colonial and social justice perspectives) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Your main tasks include designing and realizing your own PhD project, contributing to our teaching program and participating in our regular research-related activities, as well as carrying out limited administrative duties. Applicants are expected to hold an excellent master’s degree in human geography, urban studies or any other relevant social science discipline. They should have ambitions to be recognized internationally (publications, conferences). Proficiency in English is an essential requirement. We offer a stimulating and supportive work environment that provides plenty of opportunities to develop an academic career. Diversity and inclusion are important to us.

The position is for four years. The salary is commensurate with the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation (47’040 – 50’040 Swiss francs p.a. at 60% employment level). Funding for project-related fieldwork and conference visits is available.

Starting date is 01 July 2020 or as agreed upon. If you are interested, please submit a letter of application indicating a topic for your PhD as well as names and contact details of two possible referees, your curriculum vitae, copies of relevant diplomas and a writing sample (if possible your master thesis). Applications can be submitted in German or English.

Closing date: 01 April 2020.
