The Department of Geography at the University of Zurich is advertising a position as Senior Scientist (Oberassistent*in) in Social and Cultural Geography. The successful applicant will be part of the newly established Social and Cultural Geography research group which focusses on the transformation of cities and urban societies. In particular, the group develops research on urban marginalization, exclusion and socio-spatial inequalities at global and local scales. We are looking for candidates with an international research profile that aligns with the above research themes. Applicants with an interest in critical social and cultural theories (including everyday, feminist, post-colonial and social justice perspectives) are particularly encouraged to apply.
Your main tasks include developing your independent research, contributing to our teaching program and participating in our regular research-related activities, as well as carrying out limited administrative duties.
The successful candidate is expected to hold an excellent PhD degree in human geography, urban studies or other relevant social science disciplines. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to conduct internationally recognized and relevant research, expertise in qualitative research methods and would ideally have experience in higher education teaching and an innovative teaching profile. Proficiency in English is an essential requirement. We are especially interested in team-players who are keen to support the development of our research group. We offer a stimulating and supportive work environment that provides plenty of opportunities to develop an academic career. Funding for project-related fieldwork and conference-visits is available. Diversity and inclusion are important to us.
Starting date is 01 July 2020 or as agreed upon. The position is for three years with possibilities for up to three years of extension. The salary is commensurate with the University’s pay level 19/03 (101’635 Swiss francs p.a. at 100% employment level). If you are interested, please submit a letter of application briefly indicating your research plans as well as names and contact details of two possible referees, your curriculum vitae, a copy of your PhD diploma and a writing sample (your PhD thesis or relevant publications). Applications can be submitted in German or English.
Closing date: 01 April 2020.
